Is it possible to deploy a cluster of two servers one of them running Server Core and the other one Server Datacenter? They have the same features and capabilities, the only difference is the virtualisation rights. Server with a GUI has the full windows graphical environment. Core gives you a smaller install that will use slightly less system resources as it does away with most of the graphical bits.
Since the core installation is still the same under the hood as the full GUI install, I don't see any reason why you couldn't have a mix of core and GUI installations in a cluster.
So for a 4-socket server, you would need 2 licences. The licence is 'attached' to the physical hardware, not the VMs running on it. Licences can be transferred to other hardware, but not as a temporary measure. So if you are running a virtualisation cluster, each physical server in your cluster must have enough licences assigned to it to cover the highest number of VMs that will be run on that piece of hardware.
So if you wanted to run 5 VMs on one physical server, you would need 3 standard licences assigned to that server. Sorry for that, I'm completely lost when it goes for the licensing model. Even MS pages seem blurry. So, it's a case of whether I'd want to run VM's on the Srv the flavor of the server license determines the number of VM's I can run? On the other hand, if I for example wanted to get a DataCenter license, does it cater for the license for both the host and the vm's licenses? Yes, this was my initial question.

ESXi vs. Hyper-V does not matter. We choose to go with standard licenses as we could buy 2 licenses 4 VMs per host and still come out cheaper than the datacenter license. I seem to remember the tipping point being about 6 VMs per host So, in other words, the more powerfull a single instance of hardware is, the better you're off with the "virtualize everything" approach? I'm pretty sure it does not matter at all if your are running ESXi hypervisor Datacenter provides unlimited VM's regardless of the virtualization platform.

Your server licensing with standard works like this: You get 1 physical license for 2 processors and 2 virtual licenses. The physical license is tied to the host system and can't be transferred but once every 90 days.
A data center license gives you 1 physical license for a system with 2 processors and gives you unlimited virtual licenses. Essentially meaning once you decided what you are using that license with you are not legally allowed to count as using it with something else.
There is no way MS stops you from being able to do so when you are using VMware so it is pretty much all honor system. I always get the same result which is an error message 0xce - on a computer running ms windows non-core edition, run slui. Basically, its telling me that it doesn't like the license code. Calls to MS support have so far provided no help. The reason you can't activate it is because you are not connected to the internet. I learn it the hard way. When you put the license key, it try active the license right way. Because you dont have internet, it cant verify it.
